The best restaurants are often those that are tucked away in tiny corners and back alleys. In Durham’s Holland Alley, nestled alongside the Durham Hotel, you’ll find M Sushi the new venture from Michael Lee of Sono in Raleigh. It is worth seeking out this alley spot for some of the freshest most delicious sushi you’ll find in Durham. This post repeats the word fresh a lot. There’s no other way to describe this sushi – FRESH and delicious.
M has managed, in a small basement space, to carve out a sleek modern restaurant with warm woods and shades of blue. There is seating available at the bar where you can watch the chefs in action or table seating along the wall. At lunch there is a set menu and I chose the salmon option. For $15.00 I got two rolls with the first being a traditional salmon roll – no fancy sauces and filled with traditional ingredients such as carrots and cucumbers. It was outstanding for such as simple roll and that was due to the freshness of the salmon. The fish was buttery, firm and perfect. I also have to comment on the rice because unlike some other Durham sushi spots that don’t seem to have a handle on making sushi rice, the rice here was noteworthy. It clung together lightly and was actually well flavored. My specialty roll was a perfect combination of salmon, avocado and shrimp. For folks who are true sushi lovers we now have a Durham spot worthy of our dollars. I have not been for dinner but a friend has gone and she raved about the steamed buns and the chirashi. For more on M, check out the post from my fellow blogger Amber from Bites of Bull City. She did a Q&A with Michael Lee and took some drool-worthy photos.
Check out M Sushi soon. You will not be disappointed.
