GO: The Pie Hole Durham

Ninth Street’s newest spot is going to be a hit. Who doesn’t love pie? At Pie Hole Durham, the newest outpost following successful ventures in the Los Angeles area, you can get delicious pie, a cocktail, beer or creative coffee and a relaxed laid back vibe to enjoy it in. Did I mention the patio seating? I was recently able to sample my way through the menu and with options from sweet to savory I was delighted.  Lunch and dinner options include Shepherd’s pie loaded with mushrooms and ground beef in the flakiest butteriest crust ever. It was delicious! The buttery crust played well with the savory mushrooms. Chris, the kitchen manager, has a deft hand at pastry. She left her position at North Carolina Central to join Pie Hole because she wanted to “get back to scratch baking and get her hands back in dough.” She spoke enthusiastically about the Pie Hole’s offerings and their philosophy: seasonally driven pies. It’s clear that she loves baking and she’s excited to share her talent.

Sweet options include Earl Grey Pie, a custardy pie with stepped Earl Grey bringing the flavor, a double crusted blueberry pie and Mom’s Apple Crumble loaded with 10 apples in every pie. Cereal Killer, a weekend pie so it’s only available Friday through Sunday, is an icebox cheesecake packed with Fruity Pebbles and topped with Frosted Flakes. There were a dozen pies to choose from so there’s something for every taste.

And as if that’s not enough swing by for breakfast and pick up a Chorizo Hand Pie or the Veggie Kale hand pie.

I really enjoyed everything that I sampled. The Key Lime pie was perfect – not too tart, slightly sweet with a crisp graham cracker crust. There would have been a photo but . . . oh well, there was nothing left but crumbs by the time I remembered to photograph it. Pie Hole is going to be a great date spot or a perfect place to meet up with friends. They’re opening Sunday. Go grab a drink and a slice of pie and bring some sweetness to your life.
